Dubliners Book Design

Project Summary:
The purpose of this project is to design a book for selected stories in James Joyce’s Dubliners. The images, illustrations, and typography have a cohesive style to bring out the themes in these stories. The red string of fate legend will be incorporated into the design concept. According to the red string of fate, this legend says that the gods have tied a red string to the hands of two people who are destined to be together. The design concept is to have the string snap/ break throughout the book, signaling the broken ties between the characters, a play/twist on the red string of fate.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
The reader/viewer of this book should understand through Joyce’s text along with the images that people sometimes may connect with each other in a specific way, but that connection may not always last, hence the experience of heartache, frustration, and confusion. The tone is more solemn and melancholy.

Communication Strategy:
Throughout the text there will be a red string running through the pages. The red string of fate signifies that some how the characters in the stories are meant to encountered one another. However, none of the connections last. In the part of the text that signals a break in a relationship, the illustrated string will break as well, showing that a tie has been broken between the characters. Different strings may be used for different stories. Colors used will be muted colors. Images will be altered for a more posterized graphic feel. Images are taken from modern day fashion blogs. Sans serif font is planned to be used throughout the book.

Targeted Message:
Red string of fate may bring people together in different stages of life, but under certain circumstances the string may break, hence the experience of heartache, frustration, and confusion by Joyce’s various characters.
